Nicklaus routed it through old oaks, marsh grass and river light rather than over them, so every hole feels unhurried and rooted in place. About May River Course At Palmetto Bluff
May River Golf Club is a Jack Nicklaus Signature course that opened for play in 2004 as the golf centerpiece of Palmetto Bluff, a 20,000-acre Lowcountry community in Bluffton, South Carolina, along the May River near Bluffton and Hilton Head. The par-72 layout stretches to roughly 7,171 yards and threads through stands of ancient live oaks, tidal marsh and river frontage. Nicklaus's team built the course with environmentally minded features, including saltwater-tolerant Paspalum turf suited to the coastal setting. The course quickly drew praise, with South Carolina raters naming it among the state's best new courses shortly after it debuted. Today it anchors the resort experience operated in partnership with Montage Palmetto Bluff, whose Inn and later Montage hotel serve club members and resort guests. The walking-friendly design and quiet, natural corridors have made May River a signature draw for the surrounding community.
