Shady Valley Country Club in Arlington was founded in 1959 by Howard Wilemon Jr., who bought out his father and partner Joe Delk to build a course on flood-plain land then outside the city limits. Wilemon laid out the course himself and hired PGA professional Shanty Hogan to plan the tees and greens and oversee construction; Hogan then served as head professional until 1978. The 18-hole private club remains member-owned and open today.
