The course opened in 1962 as part of the Miami Lakes Inn & Golf Club, developed by the Graham family on their Miami Lakes landholdings and originally laid out by architect Bill Watts. In 1992 the Graham Companies renamed the property Shula's Hotel & Golf Club to honor Miami Dolphins coach Don Shula, whose steakhouse had opened on-site in 1989. The golf course was later redesigned by Kipp Schulties in 1998.
