Veenker Memorial Golf Course

Veenker Memorial Golf Course opened for play on May 12, 1938, from a design by the renowned architect Perry Maxwell, celebrated for his rolling 'Maxwell roll' greens and for reworking holes at Augusta National in 1937. The project was championed by George F. Veenker, Iowa State's athletic director and former football coach, alongside university president Raymond Hughes, and was built with Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration labor plus Athletic Council funds for roughly $122,000, minimizing the need for public money. The course was renamed in Veenker's honor in 1959. Sitting just north of the Iowa State campus in Ames, it serves as the Cyclones' home course, has hosted the Iowa Masters amateur championship since 1938, and staged the 1949 NCAA Championship, while still retaining many of Maxwell's original design hallmarks.
