About Warren Golf Course
The golf course at F.E. Warren Air Force Base sits on historic ground west of Cheyenne, part of a post that began as Fort D.A. Russell in 1867. Research compiled in the Perry Maxwell Archive attributes the design to the celebrated architect Perry Maxwell working with his son Press Maxwell, with a date of around 1948 drawn from Maxwell family interviews and a 1981 letter from Press. The site's early history is layered: aerial photographs show a nine-hole course by 1947 that had grown into an eighteen-hole layout before 1953, and it is not fully documented whether the Maxwells shaped the nine or the eighteen. Today the base course plays to a par of 72 at roughly 6,729 yards, a rare example of Maxwell-family work on a military installation.
