Bentwinds traces its roots to 1965 as Sippahaw Country Club in Fuquay-Varina, where members leased land to play golf. Members purchased property in 1977 and the course was built in 1980 to a Tom Hunter design, becoming Bentwinds Golf and Country Club in 1986. Kris Spence led a major renovation in 2005-2006.
