Built in 1943 on Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point and formerly known as Cherry Point Golf Course, Sound of Freedom is reputed to be the first course designed by noted architect George Cobb. It sits along the south bank of the Neuse River and is notable for having no housing along its holes; Clyde Johnston oversaw a redesign in 2003. Although it is a military (MCCS) course, it is open to the public.
