Butter Brook was designed by architect Mark Mungeam (then of the firm Cornish, Silva & Mungeam) on former farmland with sandy, well-drained soil in Westford. The front nine opened for play on April 9, 2004, and operated as a stand-alone nine for three seasons; the back nine and practice facility were completed in late 2006, and the full 18-hole, par-72 layout (about 6,810 yards) opened to the public on May 26, 2007.
