About Olde Salem Greens Golf Course
During the Great Depression, the City of Salem funded construction of a municipal golf course and hired architects Wayne Stiles and John Van Kleek to route nine holes through Highland Park, the nature preserve known as Salem Woods. Built as a public-works project, the course — then called Salem Municipal Golf Course — opened on September 12, 1933. It occupies roughly 75 of Highland Park's 275 acres and plays as a par-35 nine, still owned and operated by the City of Salem.
