Hollywood Golf Club

Hollywood Golf Club in Deal, New Jersey ranks among the older clubs in American golf, founded in 1898 as the Jersey Shore drew summering New Yorkers. Its current course grew from a routing laid out by Scottish professional Isaac Mackie around 1912, but members soon wanted more, and the club engaged the celebrated architect and champion Walter Travis. Between 1913 and 1915, Travis kept much of Mackie's corridors while completely reimagining the bunkering, green complexes and strategic angles, producing one of the country's finest examples of Golden Age design. Travis, an Australian-born three-time U.S. Amateur champion and 1904 British Amateur winner, was also an influential writer and editor. Over later decades, renovations by Dick Wilson and Rees Jones softened Travis's boldness, but the club worked with architect Brian Schneider to restore his flair, expanding and recontouring greens and rebuilding the distinctive bunkering closer to the original 1915 character.
