About Sea Island Golf Club - Plantation
The Plantation Course at Sea Island Golf Club traces its roots to 1928, when British and U.S. Amateur champion Walter Travis designed the original nine holes on the grounds of the former Retreat Plantation, a onetime Sea Island cotton estate on St. Simons Island, Georgia. Over the decades the course grew and evolved, with a Dick Wilson nine added around 1960 and a full synthesis by Rees Jones in the late 1990s. In 2019, Davis Love III's Love Golf Design team, led by architect Scot Sherman, stripped the layout to bare ground and rebuilt it as a homage to Golden Age architecture, adding deep coffin bunkers and squared-off plateau greens echoing Travis's original spirit. Set amid moss-draped oaks and coastal marsh, Plantation blends deep history with a modern, strategic championship feel.
