About Grover Cleveland Golf Course
Now an 18-hole Erie County municipal course in Amherst, Grover Cleveland began as the private Country Club of Buffalo, founded in 1889 and relocated to its Main Street site around 1901-02. Golf architect Walter J. Travis renovated the layout in 1910-11 to attract a championship, and the club hosted the 1912 U.S. Open, where 20-year-old John McDermott successfully defended his title with a 283 to remain the youngest U.S. Open champion. In 1925 the club sold the course to the City of Buffalo for $800,000 and it was renamed for President Grover Cleveland.
