Montcalm Golf Club

Est. 2004 · George F. Sargent Jr. (Wogan & Sargent)
Why we love this place

Montcalm is pure seclusion: a gated drive, a long lane climbing to the clubhouse, not a house in sight, and a Sargent layout that lets the New Hampshire hills do the talking. It earned national best-new honors in its first full season, and the quiet and the conditioning still make every round feel like a privilege.

About Montcalm Golf Club

Montcalm Golf Club was the creation of Andrew Sigler, a Dartmouth graduate and former chief executive of Champion International, who decided to build a course of his own after Hanover Country Club closed for renovation in 2001. He hired the architectural firm of Wogan and Sargent in March 2001, with George F. Sargent Jr. credited as designer, and the architects were on site every day of construction. Building the course on a large, remote tract off Smith Pond Road in Enfield, near Mascoma Lake and Interstate 89, took about four years, and Montcalm opened in 2004. The designers followed Donald Ross's principle of preserving the natural character of the land, and golfers reached the clubhouse by a gated drive and a lane of more than a mile. In 2005 Golf Digest named Montcalm one of the ten best new private courses in the country, and it later appeared on the magazine's state rankings. The club struggled financially in the late 2010s and opened more tee times to non-members, and it also became the home course of the Dartmouth College golf teams.
