About Nehoiden Golf Club at Wellesley College
Golf came to Wellesley College in 1893 when physical-training director Lucile Eaton Hill formed a golf club. In 1894 the original course was laid out by Arthur Hunnewell, credited with Massachusetts's first private golf course, together with Dr. Walter Channing of The Country Club. In June 1900 the college built a nine-hole course on college land across Washington Street, and in 1927 Wayne Stiles drew up a master plan; that year the club, originally the Wellesley Golf Club, took the name Nehoiden after a 17th-century Native American chief. It is a 9-hole course owned by Wellesley College and one of the oldest college golf courses in the United States.
