Riverside Golf Course opened in 1900 in Riverside Park as Indianapolis' first municipal golf course and the fourth municipal course in the United States, established to serve those who could not afford private clubs. Riverside also figures in the city's Black-golf history: instructor Henry Alfred Fleming served here in 1901 but was dismissed in May 1902 as public facilities became segregated, and by 1925 the Parks Department barred African Americans from its municipal links - a policy that led to the separate segregated Douglass Park course in 1926. William H. Diddel redesigned the layout around 1935.
