About Sawgrass Country Club - East/West Course
Sawgrass Country Club opened in 1974 in Ponte Vedra Beach, its original 18 holes laid out across the East and West nines by Ed Seay of Arnold Palmer's design firm. From 1977 through 1981 the club hosted golf's Tournament Players Championship, the forerunner of today's Players Championship, at a time when the TPC Sawgrass site down the road was still undeveloped marshland. Winners over the East and West nines included Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino. To toughen the layout for tour play, PGA Tour commissioner Deane Beman brought in touring pro Gardner Dickinson to make revisions, including pushing back tees. After the championship moved to the new Stadium Course in 1982, Sawgrass added a South nine to become a 27-hole facility. Today it is a private residential club combining golf with a tennis center and beach club along the Atlantic coast.
