About Souhegan Woods Golf Club

Souhegan Woods Golf Club opened in Amherst in 1991 as a nine-hole course, and its second nine followed in 1992 to complete an 18-hole public layout. The course, credited to designer Phil Friel, was routed through stands of pine in the Souhegan River country of southern New Hampshire, with bentgrass fairways and Penncross bentgrass putting surfaces on all eighteen greens. It became known locally for the sheer number of its sand bunkers, placed to reward strategy off the tee and on approach, while remaining playable for golfers of every ability. The par-72 course measured about 6,507 yards from the back tees, with a rating of 70.4 and a slope of 122, and it offered several shorter sets of tees down to about 4,700 yards. Over the years it hosted a number of New Hampshire Golf Association events, the Nashua City Championship and many group outings. The club added an all-grass driving range with targets at varying distances, a practice bunker beside the range and a large putting green, and it held manufacturer demo days for its players.
