We love that Oglebay let two legends share one hillside, and that the Palmer course welcomes rather than punishes. About Speidel Palmer Golf Course
The Palmer Course is the newer of two eighteen-hole layouts at the Speidel Golf Club, part of Oglebay Resort in the wooded hills above Wheeling, West Virginia. It opened in 2000 to a design by Arnold Palmer and his longtime partner Ed Seay, joining the older Robert Trent Jones Sr. course that had opened in 1969 and hosted a West Virginia LPGA tournament for eleven straight years. Palmer himself struck the first tee shot when the course opened. The layout plays as a par 71 with an unusual mix of six par-threes, seven par-fours and five par-fives, stretching to roughly 6,800 yards and shrinking to about 4,200 up front. Strategic bunkering, gentle mounding and generous greens make it the more approachable and modern of the club's two celebrated designs.
