About Ted Rhodes Golf Course
Opened in 1953 as the nine-hole Cumberland Golf Course, it was the fourth municipal course built in Nashville and the only one that served Black golfers during segregation. In 1969 the Metro Park Board, at the urging of Councilman Robert Lillard, renamed it for Theodore "Ted" Rhodes (1913-1969), a Nashville-born professional who won roughly 150 United Golfers Association events but was barred from the PGA by its "Caucasian-only" clause, helping pave the way for Charlie Sifford and Lee Elder. In May 1992 the Metro Parks course was redesigned and expanded from nine to eighteen holes by architect Gary Roger Baird.
