Rancho Solano opened in March 1990 as a municipal course in Fairfield, in the hills of Solano County. Architect Gary Roger Baird designed it with large, tiered greens, which remain its defining test. It has been a perennial Best Golf Course pick in the Daily Republic's Readers' Choice awards, and its sister course, Paradise Valley, followed in 1993.
