The Coeur d'Alene Resort Golf Course

Opened in 1991 on the shore of Lake Coeur d'Alene, this Scott Miller design is famous worldwide for the game's only movable floating island green. The par-3 14th plays to a green anchored on a computer-controlled barge that crews reposition by underwater cable, so its yardage changes from round to round; players who reach it ride a small mahogany boat, the Putter, out to the island. Beyond that signature, developer Duane Hagadone and Miller conceived the resort course to play like a manicured lakeside park, with immaculate turf, forested slopes, and obsessively tended flower beds. The 2,000-plus-ton green was floated into position in 1990 ahead of the following spring's opening. Consistently ranked among America's top resort courses, it pairs Pacific Northwest scenery with a novelty no other course can claim.
