About Winston Lake Golf Course
Winston Lake Golf Course opened June 16, 1956, built by the City of Winston-Salem for the city's Black residents, who had previously been allowed on the municipal course only one day a week. The original nine holes were laid out by recreation-facility expert F. Ellwood Allen with a $75,000 municipal grant, and the course expanded to 18 holes in the 1960s. It became a hub for Black golf, drawing players such as Charlie Sifford and Lee Elder, and its creation and unrestricted access marked a significant civil-rights milestone. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2023 and remains a city-operated municipal course.
