About Alfred Tup Holmes Golf Course

A City of Atlanta municipal course in Adams Park, dedicated in 1983 in honor of Alfred "Tup" Holmes, an amateur golf champion and civil-rights pioneer. In 1951 Holmes, his brother Oliver and their father Dr. Hamilton Holmes were turned away from the whites-only Bobby Jones course, prompting the lawsuit Holmes v. Atlanta. In 1955 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against Atlanta's "separate but equal" policy, desegregating the city's public courses. The original Adams Park course's founding date is not clearly documented.
