Bartram Trail grew out of a 2002 vote by Columbia County commissioners to create a nonprofit, Bartram Trail CDC, to build and run a public course on behalf of the county; it opened in 2005 beside Patriots Park as the county's public golf course. Rick Robbins of Robbins and Associates International designed it over rolling hills, wetlands and Euchee Creek, with an unusual mix of five par 3s and five par 5s. The course is certified as an Audubon International cooperative sanctuary, and ownership has changed hands since it opened.
