Bay Harbor Golf Club opened in 1998 as the centerpiece of a lakeside resort community built on a reclaimed shale quarry and former cement-plant site along Little Traverse Bay, an arm of Lake Michigan. Architect Arthur Hills routed 27 holes across dramatic terrain and split them into three distinct nines. The Links runs along tall bluffs above the water in a windswept, Scottish-inspired style; the Quarry threads through exposed limestone walls, creeks and small lakes; and the Preserve winds inland through hardwood forest and wetlands. Golfers combine the nines into three eighteen-hole routings. Debuting in the same era as Whistling Straits and Bandon Dunes, Bay Harbor earned a top-three finish in Golf Digest's Best New Upscale Public Courses of 1999 and remains one of northern Michigan's most photographed resort layouts.
