Black Mesa opened in 2003 on Santa Clara Pueblo land near La Mesilla, roughly half an hour north of Santa Fe, and quickly earned recognition as one of the year's standout new courses, including Golf Digest's Best New Affordable Course nod. Architect Baxter Spann routed the layout through a tumble of sandstone foothills, arroyos, and natural landforms, producing a bold, links-influenced design often described as unconventional and playful. Spann has credited a visit to North Carolina's Tobacco Road as inspiration for its willingness to embrace quirk and work along the edges of the terrain. Playing to more than 7,300 yards from the back tees with a slope near 141, Black Mesa rewards imagination and ground-game creativity, and remains a favorite among architecture enthusiasts and traveling golfers seeking authentic high-desert character.
