California Golf Club of San Francisco

Founded in 1918 and originally sited at Ingleside, the California Golf Club moved down the Peninsula in the mid-1920s, where a routing shaped by A. Vernon Macan and Willie Locke opened on the rolling site in 1926. Soon after, Alister MacKenzie and partner Robert Hunter were brought in to rework bunkering and several greens, deepening the course's Golden Age pedigree. After decades of incremental change had blurred the original design, the club engaged architect Kyle Phillips in 2007. His 18-month restoration re-routed the front nine, added new holes, relocated the range, and reinstated bold, sweeping bunkering. The result returned the layout to its early grandeur and cemented 'Cal Club' among the Bay Area's most admired private courses, frequently cited alongside its classic Northern California peers in national rankings.
