Callippe Preserve is the City of Pleasanton's municipal course, opened in late 2005 after nearly two decades of planning. Brian Costello of JMP Golf Design turned a former cattle pasture along Happy Valley Creek into the course, working closely with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It is named for the endangered Callippe silverspot butterfly, which lives on the site, and it has been a certified Audubon sanctuary since it opened. The site also protects the California tiger salamander and the California red-legged frog.
