Why we love this place

Cedar Knoll turned a family dairy farm into 27 holes of friendly, affordable golf, and Burlington-area golfers have noticed, voting it the best public course two years running. Three nines, a lively grill and an Ayer family welcome make it an easy favorite.

About Cedar Knoll Country Club

Cedar Knoll Country Club grew out of the Ayer family's dairy farm south of Hinesburg village on Route 116. Raymond and Ruth Ayer, watching their son Tim hit golf balls around the farm, imagined turning the pastures into a golf course, and in the early 1990s the family began converting hay and grazing fields into fairways and greens, keeping the land open rather than selling it. The tenth hole was the first one built, where the family tested new grass, and the first nine opened in 1994, with Raymond Ayer credited as designer. Further nines followed, and Cedar Knoll now has 27 holes played in three combinations, making it the largest golf facility in Chittenden County. Still run by the Ayer family, it offers a practice area, youth programs, a restaurant and banquet space, and Seven Days readers voted it the area's best public golf course in 2025 and 2026.
