Champlain Country Club

Est. 1915 · Duer Irving Sewall (1915 nine); Graham Cooke (later work, per course listings)
Why we love this place

Champlain has more than a century of St. Albans golf in its bones, with original greens still in play and a membership that now tops 300. It is good enough for the Vermont Amateur and welcoming enough for a casual weekday round. Franklin County's classic.

About Champlain Country Club

Champlain Country Club was founded on April 30, 1915, by a group of St. Albans-area railroad executives, bankers, attorneys and other professionals, starting with 100 charter members. In June 1917 the club leased 84 acres from farmers Fred and Abbie Jewett Furman for $300 a year, and construction of the original nine holes began that summer, with play under way by the early 1920s. The club bought the tract outright for $6,500 in 1921. Course listings credit the original design to Duer Irving Sewall, with later work by Graham Cooke. Land purchases followed in the 1960s and late 1970s in anticipation of a second nine, and the course now plays as an 18-hole par 71; several greens, including the first three and the last four, are said to survive from the 1915-era layout. Champlain hosted the Vermont Amateur in 2015 and the Vermont Women's Amateur in 2024.
