About Cedar River Golf Course

Cedar River is a nine-hole course in Indian Lake, in the central Adirondacks, built in 1932 by three local men on land owned by Dr. Carol Goulet, who also owned the neighboring Cedar River House. In 1947 Goulet sold both to Dewey Brown, who in 1928 had become the first known Black member of the PGA of America and had lost that membership in 1934. Brown ran the inn, served as the course's professional, built cottages and a pool, and taught and made clubs here until he retired in 1972. His son sold the course in 1976. Brown is buried in the Indian Lake Cemetery, across the road from the course.
