Gulph Mills Golf Club

Gulph Mills Golf Club was founded in 1916 by a group of Philadelphia sportsmen, many drawn from Merion Cricket Club, on rolling terrain in King of Prussia near ground where Washington's Continental Army once camped. Donald Ross laid out the 18-hole course, which opened for play in May 1919 and still carries his hallmark contoured, well-defended greens. Ross returned in 1927 with a hole-by-hole report recommending mostly modest changes to tees and bunkering. Over the following decades the layout was touched by a striking roster of architects, including Perry Maxwell, Wayne Stiles, William Gordon, Robert Trent Jones and Tom Fazio. Beginning around 2000, Gil Hanse led restoration work aimed at recovering the course's classic character. Compact but demanding, Gulph Mills is regarded as one of the Philadelphia region's fine Golden Age designs and remains a private members' club.
