Shennecossett Golf Club

Golf at Shennecossett dates to 1898, when a modest four-hole course took shape on the Groton shoreline. Over the following two decades it grew piecemeal to eighteen holes, and between 1916 and 1919 Donald Ross reworked and rerouted the layout, giving Connecticut one of only a handful of courses he designed in the state. The Town of Groton purchased the property in 1969, and today Shennecossett stands as the only public, municipally owned Donald Ross course in Connecticut. Set beside the Thames River and Long Island Sound, the seaside layout is best known for its stretch near the 16th and 17th holes, where fairways open to sweeping water views. Restoration work in recent decades has aimed to recover Ross's original character, and the course remains a beloved, affordable piece of New England golf history.
