About Fairchild Wheeler Golf Course - Red Course

The Red Course is the second of the two eighteens at D. Fairchild Wheeler Golf Course, the Depression-era complex known as Wheeler Park that sits on a rocky 400-acre tract in Fairfield and is owned by the City of Bridgeport. Bridgeport mayor Edward T. Buckingham championed the project, and hundreds of unemployed men cleared the land in the early 1930s; National Archives records show FERA beginning the work and the WPA completing both courses between 1933 and 1940. Robert W. White, a St Andrews native who was the first president of the PGA of America and a charter member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, designed both layouts. The Black Course came first, and the Red followed as a Works Progress Administration effort built around 1934. Today the par-72 Red measures about 6,570 yards from the championship tees, and the complex is home to First Tee and junior golf camps.
