About The Stanwich Club
The Stanwich Club opened for play in 1964, formed by Greenwich-area residents who wanted another top-tier course during the post-war golf boom. The father-and-son team of William and David Gordon designed the roughly 7,400-yard layout, carved from rolling backcountry terrain that straddles the Connecticut-New York line. William Gordon had built courses earlier for architects including Donald Ross, Devereux Emmet, and Willie Park Jr., and Ross's influence shows in Stanwich's big, boldly raised green complexes. The course quickly earned a reputation as one of the region's stoutest tests. A significant renovation by Tom Fazio in 2002 modernized the layout while preserving its demanding character. Long a fixture on national top-100 lists, Stanwich remains a private members' club known for its conditioning, elevation change, and unrelenting difficulty.
