Deerfield opened in 1955 as Louviers Country Club, a private club the DuPont Company built for its employees, on a layout by William F. Gordon. MBNA bought the club from DuPont in 1994, added a new clubhouse ballroom and recreation building, and renamed it Deerfield Golf & Tennis Club. After Bank of America took over MBNA and deemed the 145-acre site surplus, the State of Delaware bought it in 2005 to protect it from development, and it reopened as a public course in 2006. It is now part of White Clay Creek State Park.
