The Red Course is a nine-hole loop at East Potomac Park, credited to Robert White, added after Walter J. Travis's original 18 (the Blue Course) as demand at the capital's first full public course outgrew it; the National Park Service notes a third nine was in play by 1931. The park was the site of the 1941 effort by Black golfers to play Washington's public courses, which Interior Secretary Harold Ickes backed after they were attacked with stones.
