Ohio State University Golf Course

The Scarlet Course at Ohio State University grew from routing plans drawn by the legendary Alister MacKenzie, who submitted them to the university in 1931. MacKenzie died in 1934, and construction proceeded from his plans under Perry Maxwell, with the course opening in 1938 alongside its companion Gray Course. Located on the Columbus campus, Scarlet is the home course of the Ohio State men's and women's golf teams and helped shape a young Jack Nicklaus, a Buckeye who played here as a student. Decades later Nicklaus returned to lead a major restoration, closing the course in 2005 and reopening the renewed layout in 2006 while preserving its MacKenzie character. The course has hosted significant amateur and collegiate events over the years. Long, tree-lined, and strategically bunkered, Scarlet is widely regarded as one of the finest university courses in the country.
