Sharp Park Golf Course

Sharp Park opened on April 16, 1932, on coastal land south of San Francisco that Honora Sharp bequeathed to the city in 1917 in memory of her husband, George. Designed by Alister MacKenzie with a Spanish-style clubhouse from Willis Polk's office, it remains the only oceanside municipal course MacKenzie built in the United States. He promised it would be as sporty as the old course at St. Andrews. At its debut the layout ran about 6,173 yards to a par of 71, weaving among Monterey cypress toward Pacific views. Storms and shoreline change have reshaped several holes, and the course has long been a focus of preservation and environmental debate. Still owned and operated by San Francisco, it offers a rare chance to play genuine MacKenzie design at a public price.
