The course opened in November 1969 as Commodore Yacht and Country Club, designed by Willard Byrd with Walter Reynolds. Sea Pines took over in 1971 as part of River Hills Plantation. Members bought the club on June 14, 1977. Kris Spence rebuilt the bunkers in 2006 and the greens in 2012.
