Seabrook Island Club - Ocean Winds

Ocean Winds is one of two courses at the private Seabrook Island Club near Charleston, on Johns Island, South Carolina. Designed by Willard Byrd, it opened in 1973 and was long considered one of the finest courses in the state. The par-72 layout plays to roughly 6,800 yards and lives up to its name, with swirling coastal breezes shaping nearly every shot. The front nine winds beneath live oaks while the back nine opens into saltwater marsh and dunes; the par-3 fifteenth is built to look, as the design team put it, dropped into the marsh. In 2020 Rees Jones and lead designer Bryce Swanson completed a comprehensive renovation, lowering elevated greens, reshaping bunkers with a windswept look, flattening crowned fairways and relocating the seventeenth and eighteenth greens to capture dramatic marsh views. The refreshed course reopened that October with improved playability across six tee sets named for birds.
