Soaring Eagles Golf Course

Why we love this place

A glacier did half the design work here, leaving kettle ponds that make Soaring Eagles one of the Southern Tier's most memorable public rounds. We love its state-park setting, its Mark Twain connection and a routing with only two parallel holes, so every tee feels like a fresh discovery.

About Soaring Eagles Golf Course

Soaring Eagles Golf Course is the eighteen-hole course inside Mark Twain State Park, a state park in the Town of Horseheads in Chemung County named for the author, who spent summers in the Elmira area. Directories date the course to 1963 and credit Pete Craig with the layout. Its terrain is a product of the last ice age: a retreating glacier left hundreds of feet of sand, gravel and silt, and buried blocks of ice later melted into water-filled kettle ponds that now shape play on several holes. The routing is unusual as well, with only two parallel holes in the entire eighteen, so nearly every hole feels self-contained. Operated by New York State Parks, the course is regarded as one of the most scenic and challenging in the area.
