Austin Country Club

Austin Country Club traces its roots deep into Texas golf history, but its current course, its third home, opened in 1984 on a dramatic site along Lake Austin beneath the Pennybacker Bridge. Pete Dye designed the layout, carving holes across limestone bluffs and hillside terrain that fall toward the water, producing tight, strategic golf with Dye's characteristic bold bunkering and elevation changes. The club is inseparable from Harvey Penick, its longtime head professional who began as a caddie and later coached generations of players, most famously Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite, both of whom went on to major-championship careers. Crenshaw's emotional 1995 Masters victory came days after Penick's death. The Dye course later served as host of the World Golf Championships match-play event from 2016 through 2023, drawing the world's top players to Austin and showcasing the closing stretch, including the short, tempting seventeenth, on a stage watched globally.
