About Highland Oaks Golf Course
Highland Oaks anchors the southeastern corner of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in west Dothan, Houston County, opening in July 1993 as the fifth site on the Trail built for the Retirement Systems of Alabama. Architect Robert Trent Jones Sr. routed the layout across rolling hills, streams, and pine forest surrounding twenty-acre Wheelless Lake, named for local developer Hugh Wheelless Jr., who donated 425 acres for the project while the city of Dothan provided access roads and utilities. The facility offers three regulation nines, Highlands, Magnolia, and Marshwood, along with a nine-hole short course, giving it enormous scale and championship length from the back tees. Long, generous, and shaped for spectacle, Highland Oaks reflects the Trail's founding mission of world-class public golf priced within reach of everyday Alabamians.
