Kapalua Resort

The Plantation Course sits on Maui's breezy northwest shore above Kapalua, laid across roughly 240 acres of former Maui Land & Pineapple fields. It opened in 1991 as the first collaboration between Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, and their fondness for old-world, ground-game architecture shows in the wide corridors, blind and cut-the-corner tee shots, punchbowl contours and diagonal bunkering. Routed over a volcanic slope, the layout embraces dramatic elevation change and prevailing trade winds, and its irrigation was designed to run on gravity alone. Playing to a par of 73, it is best known for the plunging downhill par-5 18th, where the terrain lets players unleash their longest drives. Each January it opens the professional season as host of the Sentry Tournament of Champions, a fixture that has cemented its reputation.
