About Kaanapali Golf Resort
The Royal Kaanapali Course opened in 1962 as the first resort golf course on Maui, reportedly christened with a ceremonial tee shot from entertainer Bing Crosby. Robert Trent Jones Sr. routed it across rolling terrain between the West Maui Mountains and the Pacific, using gently sloping fairways and large, heavily contoured greens to test approach play. It remains one of only a pair of Hawaii layouts bearing the elder Jones's name. Playing to a par of 71 at roughly 6,700 yards from the back tees, the Royal is the sterner of Kaanapali's two courses, its companion being the Kai Course. Longtime home to resort tournament golf on the island's west side, it pairs classic mid-century design with ocean and mountain views throughout the round.
