About Shaker Heights Country Club
Shaker Heights Country Club was organized on August 18, 1913, formed by members who split from the Euclid Golf Club over relocation plans and Sunday-play restrictions. The Van Sweringen brothers deeded land near the upper Shaker Lakes, and architect Donald Ross laid out the eighteen-hole course, which opened for play around 1915. Frank B. Meade designed the English-style brick clubhouse that opened in May 1915. The routing threads around the South Branch of Doan Brook, a meandering creek that most holes border or cross at least once, lending the parkland layout its defining strategic challenge. Now surrounded by the dense residential streets of Shaker Heights, the course returns to the clubhouse at the turn before the back nine stretches outward. From 1981 to 1984 it hosted the World Championship of Women's Golf, adding a competitive chapter to one of Cleveland's storied private clubs.
