Sharpstown Park Golf Course opened in 1950 as the private Sharpstown Country Club and hosted the Houston Open in 1964 and 1965. After the club failed financially, the City of Houston acquired it in the late 1970s and hired Jay Riviere to renovate the layout as a municipal course. The forgiving par-70 track is known for the "Zindler Net" on the sixth hole, installed to protect newsman Marvin Zindler's home.
