Sleepy Hollow wins us over with its setting alone, high above the Hudson with views for miles, but the golf earns its keep too. About Sleepy Hollow Country Club
Sleepy Hollow Country Club was founded in 1911 on the 338-acre Woodlea estate above the Hudson River in Westchester County. Charles Blair Macdonald and his engineer Seth Raynor designed and built the original holes, though it was only their third project together and the work was complicated by disputes with the club's Rockefeller ownership over tree removal. In the late 1920s A.W. Tillinghast expanded the course to 27 holes, adding new holes after several originals were lost to real estate development. The result was a layered design blending Macdonald and Raynor template concepts with Tillinghast additions. Beginning in the 2000s, Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner, working with Macdonald historian George Bahto, undertook a major restoration that rebuilt the course in a unified Macdonald style, reviving template features and its dramatic hilltop character. Perched on high ground with sweeping river views, Sleepy Hollow has since hosted USGA championships and is regarded among the finest courses in the region.
