Spanish Wells Club's nine-hole course was designed by George Cobb and opened in 1970, winding between the live oaks of Hilton Head's west end. Clyde Johnston completely renovated it in 2005 with new tees, bunkers, greens, irrigation and cart paths. The club is named for freshwater wells on the property used by Spanish fleets exploring the coast; the wells still exist.
